As spring really kicks in now , the days are getting longer and the temperatures are inching upwards. This change brings not only a sense of renewal but also the perfect opportunity for us gardeners to get our hands dirty. Recently, I took full advantage of the warmer weather by potting up tomatoes, sowing lettuce, cucumber, and courgette seeds, transplanting mizuna into the polytunnel, and weeding around my asparagus beds. Let's dive deeper into these gardening activities and how daylight saving time enhances our gardening season.

The Benefits of Daylight Saving Time for Gardeners
One of the significant changes that occur when clocks go forward is the additional hour of daylight in the evening. This extra brightness means more time in the garden after work or school. For us gardeners, this gives us:
Increased Productivity: More daylight allows for extended gardening hours. After a long winter, the extra light throughout the day significantly boosts motivation and productivity.
Improved Plant Growth: More daylight hours lead to increased photosynthesis, which can help plants grow faster. In spring, as the sun sets later, plants like tomatoes will benefit immensely from that extra sunlight.
Statistics show that vegetables like tomatoes require about 6 to 8 hours of sunlight daily for optimal growth. With the clocks moving forward, gardeners can now ensure their crops receive this vital sunlight.
Embracing the Growing Season
As the days become longer and warmer, embracing the growing season becomes easier. The excitement of planting seeds, tending to vibrant greens, and witnessing their growth is fulfilling. The shift in time not only signals a change in the weather but also marks a fresh start for garden enthusiasts.
Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just starting, take advantage of this fertile season. Get out there and enjoy potting those tomatoes, sowing those seeds, and caring for your growing plants. It’s a rewarding journey that yields delicious results.
Get out into nature and embrace the beauty of gardening as we welcome spring. Happy gardening!
